A first time buyer’s guide to kitting out a bedroom

I’ve been working with a client recently to help them furnish their very first home and it has reminded me of what a minefield it can be trying to figure out what you need, what to prioritise and where you can get away with cutting back.

Therefore, I have decided to put together a ‘first time buyer’s guide’ for those of you struggling with the same issues. When you move to a new home there are two pieces of furniture that you can’t really be without – a bed and a sofa. I have decided to focus on the bedroom today with a little help from Happy Beds because it’s a good idea to priortise this room as you can’t get by without proper sleep.

So, here are my tips for kitting out your first bedroom…

1. Don’t buy everything at once

I think it’s really important not to buy every single item you will need for the room before you move in. Rooms that grow organically over time feel and look better so as long as you have the basics, the decorative accessories can come later.

2. Bedroom essentials

This is a list of essentials that every good bedroom needs:

Bed frame, mattress, bedding, bedlinen, bedside light, bedside table, clothes storage, full length mirror. All the rest can wait until you are ready to complete the room.

3. Know your room’s dimensions

When you shop for your room it is really important that you always have the exact dimensions of the room on hand so that you can make informed choices as and when you need to. This will speed up the process and give you piece of mind that everything you order will fit.

4. Go Kingsize

If space allows going kingsize from the start will save you money in the long run, even if you really don’t need such a big bed. If you think there may be the chance of starting a relationship or having kids in the future I promise you you will want a king size bed. If you only start off with a double, making the transition to a king size will cost so much more than just a new bed frame as you will need to replace the mattress and the bedding too.

5. Choosing the right mattress

Quality mattresses are incredibly important as they can be the biggest factor on how well you sleep. Buying your first mattress can be tricky as there are different options and it’s difficult to decipher what is what. To put it in basic terms, open sprung mattresses are most affordable as the springs are made of one long piece of metal. They are very light but they can be less responsive to your body. However, I have found that adding a memory foam mattress topper to an open sprung mattress makes it a great affordable option. Pocket sprung mattresses are more luxurious with thousands of individual springs housed in their own fabric pockets. This makes them more responsive, which can be better for couples sharing a bed. Memory foam mattresses are generally more expensive than open sprung ones but can be less than pocket spring mattresses. They mould to the shape of your body taking pressure off joints but that feeling of ‘closeness’ isn’t for everyone. Whichever mattress you go for remember that it will need to be replaced after about eight years. Here’s a more detailed mattress buying guide.

6. Think about how you use your bed

When choosing your first bed frame you need to think about how you will use it. Are you the type of person who lounges around in bed on weekends? Do you enjoy sitting up in bed to read at night or in the mornings? Think about the way you use your bed as this will dictate the type of headboard you should go for, for example, a solid upholstered headboard is perfect for those of us who enjoy sitting up in bed (I like this upholstered bed, don’t you?). I know vintage wrought iron bed frames look beautiful but have you ever tried sitting up against one? Also, if you toss and turn at night a rickety old bed frame isn’t a great option as it can make a lot of noise. Quality beds will last longer and give you a better night’s sleep.

If your bed is positioned in front of an uneven wall or a window then you should probably avoid a divan base with no headboard. Leaning up against a radiator like below wouldn’ be too comfy…

7. Consider storage when choosing a bed

When choosing the style of bed frame you want consider whether you will need extra storage. If so, go for a divan base with inbuilt drawers or a bed that lifts up to reveal hidden storage. If you know you can cope without this extra storage always try to go with a bed with feet as this will allow the light to travel around the room and will make the room feel brighter and bigger.

8. Bedding

There are many areas you can scrimp on around the home and you’ll never be worse off for it. However, bedding is not one of those things! You need to invest in at least two sets of really good quality bedlinen (one to go on the bed whilst the other is being washed) in either 100% cotton or linen. Good quality bedlinen will last, look better and most importantly feel better so splash out. Poor quality bedlinen is a false economy as you will need to replace it so regularly. The same goes for the quality of your duvet and pillows.

9. Invest in window treatments

Another area not to scrimp on is the window treatments in your bedroom. The amount of light that comes into a bedroom can drastically affect the quality of your sleep so you need to make sure that your windows are properly covered and you have well fitted blinds, curtains or shutters. Make sure you order these before you move in so that they can go up at the windows immediately so your first night of sleep isn’t ruined.

10. Go neutral

When it comes to decor my advice would be to go neutral to start off with. It is much easier to build on a neutral room scheme in the long term once you have settled into your home and have more time to pay attention to the details.

If you are about to move in to your first home I hope this is helpful and enjoy – it is such an exciting time!

A week on my feet

I am joining in with Luxury Flooring‘s “A Week On My Feet” campaign, inspired by one of my favourite Instagram accounts #IHaveThisThingWithFloors. The aim is to document my week by taking a snap each day of where I am standing but I must warn you that this post contains a lot of bare foot action as it turns out I am not really into shoes at this time of year!

Things are a little quiet around here at the moment as we haven’t managed to get off on holiday this summer as Jules is crazy busy with work so there’s been a lot of hanging around London trying to make the most of the sun when it decides to say hello (by the way, have you seen the forecast for this week? YES!). So, here is a diary of a very normal week around here…

A week on my feet | Apartment Apothecary

I started the week on a shoot in the most amazing house – all the heart eyes for the design and colours of these unique floor tiles. The only problem was that the house was very old and the floor very unlevel so getting a straight shot was impossible!

A week on my feet requires a bit of pampering, right?! A lovely friend gave me a Cowshed voucher recently and an Ultimate Pedicure watching Friends is one of my very favourite things to do.

A quick tour of the shops on Oxford Street to pick up a few props (I know it’s a crazy thing to do but sometimes needs must) and I can never pass Liberty without taking a snap of their flowers.

Every day of my week begins with a dog walk and it is the best way to start the day. Just look at that face!

This week I have been thinking about really easy ways to refresh my bathroom, which is showing a few signs of wear and tear and a distinct lack of love. The only thing I have ever done in my bathroom was put in this vinyl flooring when I first moved in six years ago so it’s probably time for a bit of TLC.

The scruffiest of trainers for a quick flower and plant run to our local market…

…and of course, I can’t go to the market without picking up ALL the pastries for a delicious weekend breakfast. I blame the baby 😉

And we finished the week off with dinner out with family and I spotted this rather nice flooring in the restaurant. I kind of like the combination of engineered wood flooring with patterned tiles. What do you think?

I hope we get all the sun this week – enjoy everyone!

Friday faves

I don’t know if it is the yellowing grass on our dog walks or the slight chill in the air in the evenings but I’ve been enjoying Autumnal colours, which are represented in my Friday round up of the stuff that has inspired me this week.

My sister’s wedding last month was held in a field and all the guests camped out overnight. We stayed in a caravan for a few nights either side of the wedding and I am now obsessed with the idea of having our own. What better way to zip off and enjoy a night here and night there away from home (I hate camping in a tent, you see)? So, when I saw Artemis’s vintage caravan renovation project I knew I was going to love it and I was not disappointed. You must have a look – so inspiring what you can do yourself when you put your mind to it.

Trying to enjoy the last days in the sun and spending time outside I’m appreciating the remaining greens on our daily walks and so these new designs by Abigail Borg for Ahlens really caught my eye (and they would be perfect for my new caravan!). A celebration of nature, inspired by her parents’ English garden, these beautiful bold illustrations with a Scandi feel are perfect. These designs are only available from Swedish store Ahlens but Abigail has had requests to sell to customers here so if you are interested you can contact her directly: contact@abigailborg.com.

There have been a few evenings this week when I have reached for my favourite cable knit blanket from Dot and Tom. I can not recommend this company enough – the quality and softness of the blankets is something else.

This weekend we are hoping to make the most of the last few weeks of the Midnight Apothecary for yummy cocktails (and mocktails for me). This secret garden just down the road from me is the best bar in London with a fire pit, marshmallows, a food stall and a tour of an underground tunnel shaft underneath the Thames designed by Brunel. But ssssh – don’t tell too many people about it as it is too special for hoards of people to descend 😉

Last weekend I worked on a home tour photo shoot with Katharine Peachey and I soaked up lots of interiors inspiration. I always come home with major house envy after home tour shoots and want to change everything in my own home – loving the mid century vibe of this original sixties flat with the most amazing architectural features.

This week I was treated to a preview of The White Company’s ‘The Artist Studio’ Autumn collection. The pear, quince and amber scented candle is perfect and makes me look forward to those long, cosy evenings of next season.

Another thing I’ve been pleased about this week is reeping my first harvest of tomatoes from our plant (sun gold variety is the best by the way). This tomato tarte tatin recipe by Anna Jones needs to be made!

And lastly, if you are thinking of doing an Autumn ‘refresh’ at home what about the Autumn Goddess limited edition print from The Future Kept that I have in my living room? Pop over to have a look (there’s a Spring and Summer print too).

Hope you all had a great week and let’s all try to ignore the rain this weekend!

Flower arranging tips with M&S

I would love to be able to arrange flowers rather than just dumping them into a pretty vase and hoping for the best. So when I was invited along to a flower arranging workshop with Marks and Spencer last month I jumped at the chance to learn a few tips and tricks from their Flower Expert, Simon Richards, and we had free rein over buckets and buckets of M&S flowers – perfect! They have even put together a special page of step by step flower arranging tips for us so do make sure you check it out.

Bright blooms

We started off by experimenting with brighter than bright blooms and using them to decorate a table setting. This is a super easy way of decorating a dining table and you don’t need many flowers to do so and it creates far more impact than just one vase in the middle of the table.

Flower arranging with M&S | Apartment Apothecary

Simon encouraged us to use the flowers to decorate the plates, cups and glasses, as well as using petals to decorate the table setting too. Combined with the colourful crockery the flowers create such a happy, cheerful vibe and it couldn’t have been easier – whatever goes really!

Roses

Simon then gave us a masterclass in how to take care of and arrange roses. We were lucky enough to be using beautiful Dutch roses from M&S in soft pinks and whites, which made us feel all bridal!

Flower arranging with M&S | Apartment Apothecary

The first thing to do is strip the stems of leaves as there should never been any leaves below the water level of your vase. We were then shown how to arrange them in a hand tied bouquet.

Flower arranging with M&S | Apartment Apothecary

If you are lucky enough to receive a bunch of roses you should cut the stems at a diagonal and use a vase that narrows at the top as they will sit perfectly in that. Always make sure your vase is squeaky clean as bacteria will kill your flowers and add the flower food that comes with your bouquet but change the water every couple of days.

When I returned home with an armful of roses I tried to recreate Simon’s idea of dressing a table setting with flowers, this time using a slightly softer colour palette.

Friday faves

I used to write a weekend inspiration post each Friday, which I really enjoyed putting together so I’d quite like to bring that back. It’s nice to take a moment to reflect on my week and think about what I’ve been up to, what has inspired me or piqued my interest.

Unfortunately, this week I haven’t been up to much as I’ve had a horrible throat infection that has completely floored me. However, that has meant extra time on the sofa which always leads to a bit of online shopping for me – ha! So, I thought I would share some of things I have discovered this week and a few things that I am loving…

Friday faves | Apartment Apothecary

Firstly, I want to tell you about a great plant subscription that I have been trying out from Geo-Fleur. Subscribers receive a monthly surprise package of plants or plant related accessories (think ceramic pots, hanging planters, plant prints), which are perfect if you are trying to build up your own plant collection or make unique gifts for friends. Each package comes beautifully wrapped and presented and the plants arrive perfectly in tact with instructions for how to care for them. You should definitely check it out.

I have been getting back into Instagram this week after going off it during first trimester illness (scrolling through photos made me even more nauseous!) and I have been enjoying following Rebecca’s house renovations at @rvk_loves. Vintage pink sink unit, anybody? Err, YES!

Another thing I have been doing this week is testing out paint colours as I’ve been thinking about painting the woodwork in our office when it becomes a nursery. I am tempted by either Pigeon or Light Blue by Farrow & Ball so watch this space.

And finally, a few online purchases that have been calling to me this week. The long awaited Rifle Paper Co fabrics are now available to buy (I must do some sewing!) although how to choose between the designs is beyond me. I have also discovered Nordic style dog accessories – a combination of two of my favourite things. Otto will be treated to one of Kind For Dogs aesthetically pleasing dog beds (a very difficult thing to find) in the Autumn. Three other potential Autumn purchases are these Birkenstock sliders from Toast, a dusty pink sweater from Boden and a dove grey linen throw from Linen Works – I’m still loving this soft grey and pink colour palette for next season.

Hopefully, next week will be filled with some more exciting goings-on if I can shift this throat from hell.

Have a lovely weekend, all!
