May: a review

As I sit here typing this it could not look less like May as the rain pours down and the skies resemble murky December days but until today it has been a lovely month in a number of different ways. There have been days that have felt like summer, spent with the best of friends, sitting outside and remembering what London in the sun is like. There have been wondrous day trips to the Chelsea Flower Show and Eltham Palace and weekends away in the countryside where Otto could run free and wild and swim in rivers, chasing sticks. There have also been birthdays, including Jules’s that we celebrated over the bank holiday weekend. It will be a month I remember for a long time to come. I hope that you have had a good month and that June holds exciting plans, too.

This month everyone’s Styling the Seasons images over on Instagram and the blog posts have been full of light and pretty Spring flowers and I think Caro’s beautiful images over on her blog The Twinkle Diaries sum up May so perfectly…

Here’s a list of all the wonderful Styling the Seasons blog posts from May:

Kitchen before makeover

My kitchen has always been the room in my flat that I like least: boring, generic and lacking any character. When I decided to tackle the kitchen I knew it wasn’t going to be as simple as a lick of paint and a few nice new accessories so I had to spend a while persuading Jules to help me for this project. I also had to spend a while saving up for the work as it wasn’t going to be cheap.

Before

What I didn’t like:

– I HATED the cheap laminate work tops as they were dark and a bit too ‘shiny’. None of my nice kitchen stuff looked nice on this surface! It absorbed all of the light and energy in this space.

– The door handles have always offended me a disproportionate amount; I don’t like how big they are.

– There is no big expanse of work surface

– The stainless steel sink is a nightmare to keep looking clean and it looks dull.

– Even though it is a large galley kitchen the wall cupboards and the full height cupboards at the entrance to the kitchen encroach on the space a lot.

– The kitchen felt very generic and lacked any character or felt like ‘me’.

Here’s a hotch potch selection of ‘before’ pics – I NEVER remember to take proper before pics!

Lots of cupboards made the space feel small.

At the entrance to the kitchen was this HORRIBLE wine rack (Jules loved it because it was so practical) and this HORRIBLE open full height cupboard that always looked a bit of a mess and disjointed.

During the project

I have to say that Jules did the majority of the hard graft for this DIY project. We spent all four weekends of January getting it done and it was a complete mess. We couldn’t afford to take time off during the week to do it so it dragged on and on and one weekend we didn’t finish installing the new sink so we spent that week washing up in the bath – oh the fun! I’m not going to lie, it was a slog.

We made the massive mistake of getting over excited when we first started and didn’t pack up everything from the kitchen, which added so much chaos to the mix…

What were we thinking?!

We started by replacing the work tops for real wood and Jules had to cut them to size and cut out the holes for the hob and sink using a jigsaw – I think I’m still finding saw dust in cracks around the house and Jules’s laptop packed up as it was so full of it! It was a really difficult job because the new worktops weighed a tonne and the one for the left side of the kitchen measures over 3m so manoeuvring it in our small flat was like a Crystal Maze challenge.

I also decided to remove the stainless steel panel behind the hob because I hate how difficult it is to polish and it feels quite heavy. In the future we will change the hob to a gas one but we didn’t have the budget for that this time round.

On the other side of the kitchen we had much more to do as I decided pretty early on that I wanted to remove the full height cupboard and the wall cupboards to be replaced by open shelving.

As soon as the full height cupboard came down the kitchen instantly looked twice as big!

Kitchen makeover before | DIY room makeover | Apartment Apothecary

Without that cupboard we could have a much longer work surface, which makes such a big difference.

Kitchen makeover before | DIY room makeover | Apartment Apothecary

Without the full height cupboard the dishwasher could sit underneath the work top and there was a gap so Jules made a wine rack to fit the space perfectly, which also meant we could get rid of the horrible metal wine rack.

We installed and plumbed in a new sink.

And then I painted. I chose Farrow & Ball’s Pink Ground (it took a bit of convincing – Jules was not a fan of having a pink kitchen) but he now really likes it because it is such a brilliant neutral and adds a soft warm glow to the kitchen. Definitely no sugary candy pink present here!

One of the last jobs was tiling both sides of the kitchen and I chose these white metro tiles from Tile Giant, which add a fresh contemporary feel to the space.

I changed the door handles – did you see the DIY leather handles I made? – and then we put up the open shelves on the left hand side of the kitchen. You will have to pop back next to see the full reveal!

Summer entertaining ideas

I had such a wonderful day last week at Eltham Palace (you must visit if you haven’t been before) for a summer party with The White Company. We were really lucky with the weather and managed to soak up all the beauty of the grounds accessorised perfectly with The White Company’s fresh outdoor living accessories and fed and watered with the most delicious food by former head chef at river Cottage Tim Maddams and cocktails by 31 Dover.  We went on a tour of the gardens, all maintained exactly as they were in the 1930’s – look at that Wisteria! – and learnt a bit of the history of the house with the head gardener, as well as learning styling tips for your summer table from interiors stylist Luke Batchleor. The perfect Friday afternoon.

The White Company’s outdoor collection is based on their classic white palette with touches of grey this summer and everything works so well together, feeling as fresh and crisp as ever. One of my favourite outdoor accessories is this outdoor mattress; perfect for lounging around the garden on warm days and evenings. Oh, I am also desperate for these enamel lights – aren’t they perfect?

The gardens at Eltham Palace are stunning and we were there at just the right time to stare in awe at the mature Wisteria that draped so beautifully over the historical architecture.

How to create summer flavoured cocktails

31 Dover served up fresh cocktails and rose that afternoon and here are some yummy sounding recipes for us all to give a try at our own summer parties.

1 SUB-Lime

Inspiration – Lime & Bay fragrance

1 large or 2 small fresh bay leaves (don’t even think of using dried ones) 1 heaped teaspoon of natural sugar

50ml Chase Vodka
25ml fresh lime juice

1 egg white, beaten 25ml sugar syrup

With a mortar and pestle grind the bay leaf with the natural sugar, until the bay leaf is almost powdered. Place in a cocktail shaker with the vodka, lime juice, egg white, and sugar syrup. Shake with ice cubes and strain into an ice-filled highball glass.

2 Seaside G&T

Inspiration – Summer fragrance

Inspired by the salty seaside, Edinburgh Gin’s limited-edition ‘Seaside Gin’ features native Scottish botanicals foraged from along the coastline and include seaweed, ground ivy and bladderwick. The seaside really comes through in the London Dry style gin’s green, grassy sweetness with a touch of coastal saltiness.

50ml Edinburgh Gin Seaside Gin 100ml Fever-Tree Indian Tonic Water Ice
Wedge of lemon

Build the ice in a highball glass, pour in the gin and top up with the tonic water. Add just a squeeze of lemon from the wedge and use to garnish.

3 Summer Boulevardier

Inspiration – Orange Grove fragrance (my favourite!)

The orange notes of the fragrance partner well with a Summer Boulevardier. Similar to a Negroni cocktail, the Boulevardier swaps gin for bourbon – which is a more earthy, darker spirit to complement the elements of Orange Grove fragrance. It’s also a little more punchy for those wanting to make more of a statement.

Summer Boulevardier
1 part Campari
1 part Bulleit Bourbon
1 part Belsazar Sweet Vermouth Ice

Orange zest twist

Made for socialite Erskine Gwynne in Harry’s Bar in Paris, the Boulevardier cocktail first appeared in the famous cocktails compendium, Barflies & Cocktails, in 1927. Easy to make, simply build the ingredients over ice, stir with a bar spoon and garnish with a twist of orange peel.

How to cook a BBQ feast

We ate the most incredible food that afternoon cooked by – it really was delicious – including fired salt pollack with bay, rosemary and chilli, with grilled asparagus and goats curd, lemon and mint and wood fired garlic flat bread. Yum attack!

Tim Maddems shared his tips for the perfect crowd-pleasing barbecue whilst cooking up a storm for us…

1. Preparation is key. Get your prep done before you want to start cooking. That includes making sure you have all the kit you need to hand, long-handled tongs, more charcoal, serving dishes, seasoning and oven gloves are all a must, but think about chopping boards and knives, and somewhere to rest meats.

2. You don’t need any fancy kit, a simple kettle type barbeque will be fine for most things, make sure the grills are clean! However, don’t be tempted to buy a gas barbeque – you might as well cook indoors.

3. Let your location do the talking. If you are planning a barbeque on the beach, serve fish, not chops and sausages.

4. Site your barbeque as near to your dining tables and kitchen area as possible, you don’t want to spend all your time running back and fourth.

5. Don’t use imported charcoal. You want coppice charcoal form a sustainable British source, there are lots to choose from, it get hot quickly and lights easily – what’s not to like?

6. Light your fire in plenty of time, it will take a little longer than you think to be ready to cook on. Look for the flames to have died down and the embers to be glowing with a light covering of ash before you attempt to start cooking.

7. Have two different zones for your barbeque. I light the fire on one side and keep it going in there. As the embers spread to the other side I know where on the grill to cook, and can manage the heat, moving things that need to slow down to cooler places, and things that need a push to a hot spot.

8. Fat creates fires, so beware if you are cooking very fatty things they will cause the fire to flare up and often burn things.

9. Allow enough time! Don’t try and rush a barbeque, it won’t work, or if you need to avoid things that take time to be cooked thoroughly, like chicken and sausages.

10. Use aromatics to deepen flavour – for example, I often grill sardines or mackerel on the barbeque, and I always lay branches of fresh bay leaves over the grill first, to add flavour but also as its stops them sticking to the grill and makes them far easier to handle.

11. Avoid sweet, sticky marinades, on a hot barbeque they tend to burn and add very little to the end dish except bitter, burnt-sugar notes.

12. I like to use spices, oil and citrus along with fresh herbs to make up my flavour palate for barbequing. Make sure everything to be cooked on the grill is at an ambient temperature before it goes on – fridge- cold meat, fish and veg won’t cook so well.

13. When the grill is too hot for cooking meats, fish, veg or cheese it’s often perfect for getting some flat breads done. Serve these with a few dips as a quick starter that will help to take the edge of your guests’ hunger, buying you time and providing tasty treats.

14. Be creative with your sides; simple but different salads are the way to go, combined with a carb-laden potato or pasta salad and some flat breads for those who like their meals heavy.

15. Relax and enjoy yourself, don’t rush, its all about easy dining, there are no rules, if it takes an hour to cook a whole leg of lamb to perfection, then do so, simply cooking one great piece of meat and serving it with lots of prepared earlier side dishes is a great way to go.

Living room makeover reveal

Enough of the teasing – my living room is finally ready to share with you, beautifully photographed by Katharine Peachey. It took a lot longer than expected as the sofa was very delayed so I couldn’t pull the room together without that but I hope you’ll agree that it was was worth it in the end (we definitely think so and it has made not only this room but the whole flat feel completely different). If you didn’t catch my ‘before’ post last week head over to read it here and see what the room looked like before I redecorated and a bit of the decorating process.

I wanted this space to feel lighter, fresher, simpler and more cohesive, as well as working better on a more practical level (it had to be dog friendly and allow Jules and I to use the room in the evenings and for eating without being squished on a sofa that was too small or perched at a table shoved against the wall). I also wanted this room to tie in more with the style of our home office and bedroom to make the whole flat flow better. As i explained in last week’s ‘before’ post, the first thing I did was to paint the room in one of Farrow & Ball’s new colours. I chose Peignoir, which is pink with a big dose of grey and it changes colour from the softest of blush pinks, to dark grey to mauve depending on the light and weather. It is a wonderfully calm feeling colour and I decided to base the colour scheme around its two components of grey and pink.

So, here’s how the room looks now…

I simply turned the dining table around and installed a hanging pendant over it and both of these changes have made it feel 100% more inviting and conducive to sitting and chatting after dinner.

The two wishbone chairs in front of the window are perfect as they don’t block any light and are super comfy if we have a few people over or they can double up as extra dining chairs. I made a pink linen cushion for one of the chairs and have a gorgeous grey cashmere blanket on the other so that there are dots of soft pink and grey on all sides of the room.

I kept this white cupboard, which used to be on the other side of the room, as it is great for storage and isn’t too big or heavy, which was the problem with the G-plan sideboard that used to be in this position.

Living room makeover reveal - home of Katy Orme | Photography by katharinepeachey.co.uk | Apartment Apothecary

The new sofa is a revelation as we can all be comfortable sitting/lying down together (I get the chaise bit, natch!). The grey wool is perfect as it repels dirt when Otto brushes up against it after a muddy walk and it really brings out the grey in the Peignoir wall colour. I love the mid-century style feet and the fact it sits off the ground helps to keep the light flowing around the room. It is long enough to stretch the length of the wall now so makes better use of the space. The jute rug is ideal for Otto as it shows no dirt or hair and does not move an inch even without underlay, which is really important as he is constantly rolling around on the floor.

This Anglepoise wall mounted lamp is completely perfect for this space as there wasn’t room for a floor lamp. We can easily move it around to make it a reading lamp or an uplighter for soft even light. I really love it.

The new Ercol coffee table is one of my favourite additions to this room. As well as being a very practical size, shape and design, it is beautifully made and works perfectly with the colour tones in this room.

I bought the Eucalyptus tree because I love the silvery colour of the leaves, which complements the greys and pinks.

The touches of black around the room from the lamp, mirror and this beautiful print from The Future Kept help to ground the scheme and add some contrast.

I repainted the floor with Farrow & Ball’s All White floor paint, which helps to keep the Peignoir feeling fresh and modern, whilst the jute rug adds some warmth.

I really hope you like what I’ve done to the room; the changes have made the room work so much better than it used to, which is the main thing. Everybody who has visited have said that they love how calm the room feels now and I really feel that on a daily basis.

I will show you the kitchen later this week!
