Selection of the best day beds

As I said in my nursery inspiration post, we definitely want a day bed in the baby’s room so I have started to have a look at some of the best options. There are a few reasons we have decided it’s a good thing to have in this room ranging from being able to house family members who want to come and stay, an extra bed for either Jules or I to escape to when the sleep deprivation gets too much, a cosy place I can nap and feed the baby and I think it will help make the room feel welcoming and become almost a second living space.

I have always, always wanted an Ercol day bed but it doesn’t quite fit our requirements that the bed be inexpensive and sleep two. It will just have to stay on my wish list for another few years!

Here are a few day beds that do meet our requirements but also a few others that aren’t quite right for us but may work for you…

I’ve always really loved this day bed and it would work really well in the room but it’s just a bit too expensive for my budget. Two pack day bed from Loaf (they have a couple of other great options, too).

I would loooooove to have this piece in my life and it would look amazing in the room but it doesn’t sleep two and it’s a bit too pricey. It’s definitely on my wish list for the future though. Day Bed One from Another Country.

This is a good option as it converts to a double bed and I like the simple design and I could easily personalise the frame with paint. TARVA Day Bed from Ikea.

My dream day bed – I will have it one day! You can buy one similar from Layer Home.

A very practical option as it converts to a king size bed, it’s well priced and it has under bed storage, which always appeals. HEMNES day bed from Ikea.

Pin me!

It looks like there will be a trip to Ikea soon and as long as I’m treated to a hotdog at the end I’ll be happy 😉

I’ve been looking for one too Katy, for our small spare room that can be used for guests… I like the white ikea one but we have a window that the end bit will sit over! 🙁 Looks like a might just be painting the old built in bed for now…. lovely selection though. x

Ah yes, that is the problem with a high-sided one. However, I worry that the ones with low sides are not as comfy to sit on as there is nothing to rest up against. Hmmm. I guess it depends on what it will be used for most but blocking light from the window isn’t great, I agree x

The other thing to remember with the high sided ones is that one person may have to sleep in that bit, and if they need to get up in the night for a loo trip or something, they will have to climb over their sleeping partner! I wanted something very similar to the ones you’ve got above, but in the end went for a very simply John Lewis bed with a truckle bed underneath, as we needed something that would suit elderly parents when they stayed. (And if you’ve got a tall guest, they may not fit in one with ends on anyway!). Thb, we don’t use it as a sofa though, it’s in our spare room which is also used as my treatment room for my aromatherapy clients. I do intend to make a bolster cushion for it one day, and a cover for the base too, so it looks a bit less bed-like, although when I’ll get around to it I don’t know! Everyone says it’s very comfortable though, and we can have it as a single, king-size (zipped together) or twins which gives great flexibility.

    Hi Katy,
Recently been through this for a spare bed for our Rachel’s new place. Some of the beds are gorgeous but sometimes they use foam that is fine to sit on but pretty hard for sleeping on all night. Some of them are small doubles which can get a little claustrophobic for two people if you aren’t used to them as they can be up to 6 inches narrower. Tried all Ikea options, SCS, etc. but we opted for a tilt and flatten Perth storage option from Dreams. Not up to your high standards of style but it is a proper double size, comfortable and not too intrusive in upright mode. Bottom line is try them out, check the size and overall dimensions in all modes meet your requirements.

An Ercol daybed… dreamy! Until that particular dream is realised, we have the IKEA Hemnes daybed – I like that it has storage for the pillows, duvet and other necessary bits that aren’t being used to prettify it and I like the high sides. It is also fairly high as we keep both mattresses piled on top. Friends use it regularly and have no complaints!

Hi Katy, I’ve just picked up on this sorry. I’ve also been looking at the Loaf v’s Ikea day bed options. Have you now got the Ikea Tarva day bed? I’m worried that it won’t be sturdy/comfy enough… How are you getting on with it?

Hi Jennifer. I actually went for the Hemnes day bed from Ikea, which is very sturdy and I have had one night in it and it was comfy. Great amount of storage too. Sorry, I have no idea about the Tarva one (I went to Ikea the other day and couldn’t see it on display either). Hope that helps x
